CONCEPT Los Angeles Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011 Collections: Los Angeles-based designers showcase their latest creations under their own terms

If you’re coming to LA Fashion Week expecting to see shows something like New York, London or Paris, you are in for a big surprise…in a good way.

Held at ACE Gallery, CONCEPT Los Angeles Fashion Week founded by fashion designer Mike Vensel and downtown Los Angeles visionary Brady Westwater, was founded as a new alternative for designers to showcase their collections on their own terms. ACE Gallery provided a blank canvas which allowed designers to push the creative envelope and expand the idea of what a fashion show can be---runway shows, artistic installations---no boundaries.

eye*like*your*style caught up with ISM Mode designer Inka Sherman at her artistic installation.

eye*like*your*style: Tell us about your line.

Inka: This is the second season for ISM Mode. I’m originally from Berlin so it has a whole European vibe to it. My whole idea is to mix comfort with sophisticated so there’s a lot of flow and softness and structure at the same time. I use a lot of jersey, so comfort is what the line is really all about. I just feel like your clothes are your second skin. There’s a lot of jersey but there’s some detail. You’re supposed to feel well in your clothes. But obviously with feeling well and comfort you have to have the style.

eye*like*your*style: Tell us what inspires you to create?

Inka: I work kind of in a conceptual way. In a way where I think about what it is I want to achieve in comfort and style. So I decided to blend those things in a conceptual way. I do some of the more complicated dresses like the draping and figure it out on a mannequin. Or sometimes, I like to work with geometry so I take a piece of fabric that’s just a square and see what I can make from it. This skirt for example is just a square, like Origami, I fold it in different ways to get this look. So it’s very conceptual in a sense, like trying to take shapes and make them into something else. I love the 20’s. That’s something that’s a constant that will be there. But I also love the modern and plain forms and then the more sculptured elements, I feel like it’s a mix of stuff.

eye*like*your*style: Who is the woman you design for?

Inka: Honestly, it’s kind of a wide age range. Younger girls can wear them but my mom actually likes a lot of the things but my mom is also maybe not the typical mom, she’s a more artsy girl. She wears very stylish very beautiful clothing. It’s an artistic person.

eye*like*your*style: Where can we find your clothes?

Inka: There are a few stores in LA. Chemline in Chinatown carries it and EM & Co on West 3rd. There will be more soon!

eye*like*your*style: Where is your line produced?

Inka: The line is all made in L.A. I use some organic fabrics I’m trying to do that more. It’s kind of a growth process because a lot of the fabrics I use for the textures nobody makes those in organic yet. I’m trying to have those changed for me so it’s in the process.

eye*like*your*style: What’s on the horizon for ISM Mode?

Inka: We’re trying to start a non-profit afterschool program for low income kids. There are many layers to what we’re doing.
